Research provides evidence that 9 months is the MINIMUM amount of time before athletes should return to sports. Additionally, there is substantial research done on factors that significantly decrease the risk of second ACL injuries including symmetrical range of motion, strength and proper return to sport testing. All of these should be continually addressed in physical therapy and attention to detail is important.
There are three primary reasons why ACL rehabilitation with me is better than standard physical therapy faciltiies, my extensive knowledge on ACL rehabilitation, quality of care and the facility. I have personally suffered two torn ACLs and have made it a priority to seek out extensive research to improve the outcomes of my patients. Research provides evidence for optimal full recovery and I focus on every detail of recovery to ensure safely returning to sports. I provide one-one-one hour long appointments where you will be working directly with me. Exercises are a strong component to ACL recovery and an untrained physical therapy technician should not be monitoring all of your exerises. Athletes recovering from ACL reconstruction should be challenged every session and our model of physical therapy allows for optimal treatment you deserve. Additionally, our facility is built for athletes, we offer a 40-yard indoor turf space, extensive weight room and ample peices of equipment to consistently challenge athletes throughout the rehabilitation process. Strength and confidence are two major keys to ACL rehabilitation, many standard physical therapy facilities can not provide the neccessary equipment and open space to continuously challenge athletes in the later phases of recovery.
Research provides a range of approxmately 20-25% of ACL patients who go on to suffer a secocnd ACL injury. Many people who fall into the second ACL tear statistic are due to reasons when can be improved upon with better physical therapy including, achieving full range of motion, symmetrical leg strength and proper compleition of return to sport testing. All of these factors are proven to substantially reduce the risk of second ACL tears.
Research tells us that roughly 20-25% of paitnets who have ACL surgery go on to have a second ACL tear. While there are numerous reasons why athletes suffer a second ACL injury, many of them are due to not fully recovering from the first surgery. Research provides criteria that need to be met in order to fully recover. Reasons for second ACL tears include, going back to sports too early, lack of full knee range of motion, decreased strength in the surgical knee compared to the non surgical knee and failure to complete return to sport testing. All of these factors which increase the likelihood of suffering a second ACL tear CAN be improved upon with quality physical therapy.
This question is hard to answer as everyone recovers differently. As indicated by research, 9 months is the minimum amount of time before athletes should return to sports. If recovery is steady with full commitment, 9 months is the bare minimum I would recommend someone stay in physical therapy. My goal is to properly rehabilitate ACL patients the first time so they don’t suffer a second injury. While my methods may require a longer commitment, I guarantee better outcomes than standard physical therapy facilities.
Yes, your knee will feel normal again but that comes with a commitment to rehabilitation. My physical therapy sessions focuses on regaining full range of motion, strength and confidence in your knee. My goal is for my athletes to become the strongest version of themselves so they can confidently return to the sports they love.
